Students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) have developed an innovative syrup called Kokoluks, using Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) as its base. This creation is positioned as a healthier alternative to conventional sugary beverages, catering to the increasing consumer preference for wellness-oriented products. Kokoluks is designed not only to provide energy but also to aid in weight management, assist in blood sugar regulation, and offer antioxidant benefits due to the properties of VCO.
The syrup features natural sweeteners like erythritol, a sugar alcohol that provides sweetness with minimal impact on blood glucose and insulin levels. This approach aims to reduce the health risks associated with high sugar intake, such as those linked to high-fructose corn syrup and refined sugars. Erythritol, known for its low calorie count and zero glycemic index, is also recognized for potential benefits to dental health by reducing plaque and preventing cavities. While generally considered safe in moderation, some research suggests potential long-term cardiovascular risks with high consumption, though health agencies maintain its safety when consumed appropriately. The inclusion of erythritol in Kokoluks reflects a deliberate choice to create a product that is both palatable and health-conscious.
Virgin coconut oil itself is recognized for various health advantages. Its medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are efficiently converted into energy, potentially supporting metabolism and weight management.
