Murdoch University Launches Bioplastics Innovation Hub to Combat Plastic Waste

05:28, 25 July

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

Murdoch University, in collaboration with CSIRO and industry partners, has established the Bioplastics Innovation Hub (BIH) to develop fully compostable bioplastics aimed at addressing global plastic waste challenges. The BIH focuses on creating biodegradable plastics that can decompose in compost, land, or water, thereby reducing environmental impact.

The initiative brings together experts in microbiology, molecular genetics, synthetic biology, biochemical engineering, advanced manufacturing, and circular economy to translate bioplastics research into practical applications. A key project involves partnering with Ecopha Biotech Pty Ltd to develop a new process for producing water bottles using compostable bioplastics derived from food industry waste products.

Murdoch University's Deputy Vice Chancellor Research & Innovation, Professor Peter Eastwood, emphasized the importance of innovative technological solutions in managing the growing plastic waste crisis. The BIH aims to fast-track the production of novel compostable bioplastics, introducing sustainable alternatives to the market and minimizing reliance on non-sustainable plastic production.

The Bioplastics Innovation Hub is based at Murdoch University's main campus and plays a crucial role in training the next generation of workforce in advanced biomanufacturing. This initiative aligns with CSIRO's goal of reducing plastic waste entering the Australian environment by 80% by 2030 and supports Australia's commitment to the United Nations Global Treaty on plastic pollution and the Australian government's National Plastics Plan.
