Oman Advances Agricultural Innovation to Strengthen Food Security

Edited by: Olga Samsonova

Oman is actively integrating advanced technologies into its agricultural sector to enhance food security and sustainability. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources is leading initiatives to modernize farming practices through precision agriculture, which employs tools like GPS-guided machinery, soil and crop sensors, drones, satellite imagery, and AI-powered farm management software. These technologies enable real-time monitoring of soil health, crop conditions, and water usage, optimizing resource application and boosting productivity.

In line with Oman Vision 2040, the country aims to increase food self-sufficiency and expand cultivated land. The strategy emphasizes sustainable water use, targeting a significant rise in water availability, and supports the adoption of modern technologies, precision farming, and digitized agricultural services. The Ministry, along with various public enterprises, is introducing climate-resilient crops and innovative farming techniques, such as hydroponics and greenhouse cultivation, to maximize output with limited resources. Data analytics and AI tools assist farmers in making informed decisions based on market trends, crop health, and weather forecasts. Agricultural biotechnology, including tissue culture, is enhancing crop yields and disease resistance, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient agricultural system.

A notable project is the Million Date Trees Plantation, which utilizes satellite imagery, GIS, and AI to optimize date palm cultivation. Data collected via sensors and drones are analyzed using AI/ML technologies to detect issues such as pest infestations, enabling targeted interventions and leading to increased production and improved date quality. This project exemplifies Oman's commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable agricultural development.

Through these efforts, Oman is positioning itself as a leader in agricultural innovation, aiming to achieve greater food security and economic diversification. The integration of advanced technologies reflects a strategic approach to modernizing the agricultural sector and ensuring a sustainable food supply for the nation.
