Bahrain's Culinary Heritage: Rice Dishes

12:35, 29 January

Edited by: Елена 11

Bahrain's culinary landscape is rich with history, particularly through its beloved rice dishes that embody the country's culture.

The national dish, machboos, features long-grain basmati rice cooked with spices, onions, tomatoes, and dried lime, often accompanied by fish, lamb, or chicken. Served with daqoos, a tangy tomato sauce, it is a staple at family gatherings and celebrations.

Biryani, originally South Asian, has become a favorite in Bahraini households, combining meat with herbs, yogurt, and spices over basmati rice, often enriched with boiled eggs, raisins, and fried onions. It is commonly enjoyed during special occasions.

Harees, traditionally made during Ramadan, is a comforting dish of slow-cooked wheat and sometimes rice, served with clarified butter and a sprinkle of sugar or cinnamon.

Muhammar offers a sweet twist, featuring rice sweetened with sugar or date syrup and flavored with cardamom, saffron, and rosewater, typically served with grilled fish.

Another popular dish, kabsa, layers rice with spiced meat and vegetables, often cooked in one pot, allowing flavors to meld beautifully.

These rice dishes symbolize hospitality and community in Bahrain, showcasing the country's diverse culinary influences. They are more than meals; they are a connection to Bahrain's rich traditions and history.
