Filmmaker Anuparna Roy has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first Indian director to win the Best Director award in the Orizzonti Competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. Her directorial debut, "Songs of Forgotten Trees," secured this prestigious accolade, marking a significant moment for Indian cinema on the global stage.

"Songs of Forgotten Trees" explores the lives of two migrant women navigating the complexities of Mumbai. The film, presented by acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, was produced by Bibhanshu Rai, Romil Modi, and Ranjan Singh. It features performances by Naaz Shaikh and Sumi Baghel in the lead roles. The film premiered on September 1, 2025, to a positive reception, praised for its sensitive portrayal of human connection and resilience.

Roy, who hails from rural Bengal and previously worked in the IT sector, transitioned to filmmaking despite initial apprehension from her parents, Brahmananda and Manisha Roy. Her journey is a testament to her dedication and vision. The Orizzonti section is known for championing emerging talents, and Roy's success in this competitive arena, following in the footsteps of previous Indian honorees like Chaitanya Tamhane for "Court," highlights her ability to craft universally resonant narratives.

In her acceptance speech, Roy dedicated the award to women worldwide and advocated for peace. Industry figures have lauded her directorial prowess. Producer Bibhanshu Rai commented on her tenacity, while Romil Modi emphasized the importance of supporting women filmmakers. Anurag Kashyap expressed his belief in backing new talent with distinct voices. The film's second-unit DOP, Sakyadeb Chowdhury, praised her courage and aesthetic vision. "Songs of Forgotten Trees" is slated for an Indian release in late 2025, poised to introduce a distinctive voice to the film landscape.
