Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass — The Iconic Duo Journeys to Ancient China

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

The legendary rivalry between the cat Tom and the mouse Jerry is set to disrupt the status quo once again in the new feature-length animated picture, Tom and Jerry: Aventura en el tiempo. This highly anticipated international co-production is scheduled for release in Spain on October 24, 2025. The timing of the film is particularly significant, marking the 85th anniversary of the characters’ creation by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who first established their timeless conflict back in 1940.

Steering the project is Chinese filmmaker Zhang Gang, who handled both the directorial duties and the screenplay. The film’s original English title is Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass. This ambitious production brought together a powerful global alliance, including China Film Co. Ltd., Warner Bros. Discovery, and Origin Animation, underscoring the worldwide scope of the endeavor. While the Spanish premiere is set for late 2025, the film has already debuted in Asia. It was first screened at the Shanghai International Film Festival on June 21, 2025, before hitting general release in China on August 9, 2025.

The narrative quickly deviates from the familiar domestic settings typically associated with the duo. The action kicks off within the hallowed halls of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, where their typical chaotic chase reaches a fever pitch. During this frantic pursuit, an interaction with a mysterious artifact—known as the Astral Compass—inadvertently triggers a temporal portal. This sudden rift in the space-time continuum whisks the inseparable antagonists away, transporting them to a dazzling, golden metropolis. The architectural style and cultural cues of this new location clearly point toward the grandeur of Ancient China.

This newly entered dimension is teeming with magic, legendary figures, and formidable stone guardians. To restore balance and, crucially, find a way back to their own time, Tom and Jerry must do more than simply resume their usual antics. They are forced to fundamentally rethink their established patterns of interaction. Facing entirely new adversaries, they discover that their eternal rivalry must transform into a necessary, albeit reluctant, partnership. This pivotal narrative shift allows the audience to view their conflict not as an end in itself, but as a catalyst for forging a deeper, more meaningful bond.

Running for 104 minutes, the film promises the signature cascade of slapstick physical humor that has always been the franchise’s hallmark. However, this time, the comedy is framed within an epic fantasy landscape. This production is far from a mere retread of old gags; it offers both the characters and the audience a chance to witness how deeply ingrained behavioral patterns can evolve into something far greater when external pressures demand an entirely different approach.
