The Twelfth Riga International Film Festival (RIGA IFF) is gearing up for its run from October 16 to 26, 2025, once again solidifying its reputation as the largest and most significant international cinematic event in Latvia. This prestigious forum, which traces its origins back to 2014 when Riga proudly served as the European Capital of Culture, will hold its grand opening ceremony at the legendary Splendid Palace cinema. Annually, RIGA IFF presents approximately one hundred world-class films to a broad audience while simultaneously operating as a crucial networking and development hub for film industry professionals across the Baltic region.

The festival’s programming slate will launch with the highly anticipated animated feature, “God’s Pet,” helmed by directors Lauris Ābele and Reinis Ābele. This striking piece of filmmaking, which was previously put forward by Latvia for the Academy Award consideration in the “Best International Feature Film” category, offers a uniquely dark comedic immersion into the turbulent history of 17th-century Livonia. Through its distinctive visual language and meticulous rotoscoping technique, the film explores the remarkable resilience of a community facing brutal trials, pervasive gothic horror, and deeply rooted dark traditions.

A major draw in the lineup is the long-awaited presentation of “At Least a Chance,” the latest masterpiece from the distinguished Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. This powerful drama has already secured immense international recognition, notably receiving the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Panahi consistently uses his craft to address fundamental questions concerning human dignity and civil rights in Iran, and this new work is no exception, recounting the heartbreaking narrative of a family thrust into tragic circumstances following a sudden, devastating accident.

Complementing the main features, the competitive program section will be enriched by a series of world premieres originating from the vibrant film scenes of Scandinavia and the Baltics. Key titles include Janis Askevoll’s “Strawmama,” a film promising a detailed and insightful analysis into the anatomy of the 21st-century family structure, alongside the debut full-length effort, “The Incredible,” from Emirati director Emia Talund. It is noteworthy that the innovative animation by the Ābele brothers, "God's Pet," has also been selected for inclusion in the competitive section, highlighting the breadth and quality of their artistic contribution.

Sonora Broka, the Art Director of RIGA IFF, commented on the escalating quality of the submissions received, noting that while the selection process becomes increasingly complex, it remains an engaging and fulfilling endeavor. The festival is dedicated to delivering a truly transformative experience for viewers, leveraging the profound power of immersive cinema. In addition to the opening venue, Splendid Palace, screenings will be hosted at Forum Cinemas, K. Suns, and the Latvian National Library, ensuring wide accessibility. Furthermore, the entire program will be available for online viewing across all of Latvia.
