Director Imanol Uribe's latest film, 'La sospecha de Sofía' (Sofia's Suspicion), is set to premiere in theaters on October 3, 2025. The espionage thriller, drawing loose inspiration from Paloma Sánchez-Garnica's 2019 novel, which won the Planeta Award in 2019, explores the complex world of spies, a subject that has long intrigued Uribe. Uribe, known for works addressing social and historical themes such as 'Días contados' and 'El Rey Pasmado', and a recipient of the Golden Bear and Goya Awards, has turned to the theme of espionage and personal dramas against the backdrop of geopolitical events.

The plot centers on Daniel, who receives an invitation to meet his biological mother in the tense environment of East Berlin. This personal quest becomes entangled with a KGB plot involving his twin brother, Klaus, leading to a dangerous game of identity theft that places Sofía in a state of deep suspicion. This meeting becomes the beginning of a dangerous game into which he is drawn by the KGB, involving a cunning plan to create an operational center in Francoist Spain. Aura Garrido stars as Sofía, and Álex González plays the dual roles of Daniel and Klaus.

While Uribe has expressed interest in broader conflict themes, such as a potential film about Gaza, the logistical challenges are considerable. 'Sofia's Suspicion' adapts Sánchez-Garnica's novel, with the screenplay written by Hemma Ventura, which has received varied reviews, with some praising its atmospheric tension and performances, while others found its plot more akin to a dramatic soap opera than a typical spy thriller.

The film's setting in East Berlin during the Cold War leverages the historical context of espionage, with Berlin serving as a notorious "capital of spies" where intelligence agencies from both sides operated extensively.

The theme of identity theft and mistaken identity is central to 'Sofia's Suspicion.' The KGB plot involving Daniel's twin brother, Klaus, and the subsequent identity theft, introduces a compelling layer of intrigue. This element adds a personal dimension to international espionage, challenging characters to question trust and their own identities, promising a journey into a world where appearances are deceiving and truth is a guarded secret. After its theatrical release, it will appear on the Prime Video platform.
