Martin Scorsese is set to produce and direct the film adaptation of Peter Cameron's novel, 'What Happens at Night,' with production anticipated to commence in January 2026.
The film will star Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, marking their first on-screen collaboration with Scorsese as director. This project will be Scorsese and DiCaprio's seventh collaboration, further solidifying their extensive partnership in cinema. Apple Original Films is in talks to finance and produce the film alongside Studiocanal, continuing Apple's investment in director-driven projects following their collaboration on Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon.' Patrick Marber is adapting the screenplay for the film.
The story follows an American couple on a journey to adopt a child in a remote European town. Their stay at a nearly deserted hotel introduces them to peculiar characters and unsettling events, prompting them to re-examine their lives and relationship. The novel, first published in 2020, has been noted for its eerie atmosphere and psychological depth, drawing comparisons to 'Shutter Island' and 'Twin Peaks' due to its dream-like narrative and unsettling tone.
DiCaprio's upcoming film, 'One Battle After Another,' directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is generating significant acclaim and is scheduled for release on September 26, 2025. Jennifer Lawrence's next film, 'Die My Love,' produced by Scorsese, is slated for release on November 7, 2025.
