Original 'Star Wars' Version Returns to the Big Screen After Decades

14:44, 23 June

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

The original 1977 version of 'Star Wars: A New Hope' was screened publicly in June 2025 for the first time in decades. This rare event took place at the British Film Institute's (BFI) 'Film on Film' Festival, held in London from June 12-15, 2025.

The screening allowed fans to experience the film in its original form, without the later changes made by George Lucas in the 1990s. These changes included the digital addition of Jabba the Hutt and adjustments to the shooting sequence between Han Solo and Greedo.

The original 'Star Wars' was presented in an original, unfaded IB Technicolor British release print, preserved in the BFI National Archive. This presentation offered viewers the chance to see the film as it was first shown on the big screen in 1977. The event was highly anticipated and appreciated by film critics and fans alike.

It provided a unique insight into the history of film and the evolution of 'Star Wars' into the cultural phenomenon it is today. This screening underscores the importance of preserving and presenting films in their original form, allowing future generations authentic access to film history.
