DC Studios Co-Chairman James Gunn recently unveiled the first official image of Millie Alcock portraying Kara Zor-El for the highly anticipated film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This reveal provides fans with a crucial first look at the heroine who is set to take center stage in the DC Universe's expanding cinematic narrative, promising a fresh take on the iconic Kryptonian.

The production timeline for the feature was notably swift and efficient. Filming commenced in January 2025 and successfully wrapped up by May 2025. The picture is helmed by director Craig Gillespie, widely recognized for his work on acclaimed films such as I, Tonya. The US premiere is slated for June 26, 2026. Significantly, this movie marks the second major cinematic release within the revamped DC Extended Universe (DCU) under Chapter 1, titled “Gods and Monsters.” It follows closely behind the Superman film, which is scheduled for release in July 2025. The screenplay adaptation was skillfully handled by Ana Nogueira.

The narrative draws inspiration from the acclaimed eight-issue comic book series penned by Tom King and illustrated by artist Bilquis Evely, which originally began publication in June 2021. The plot centers on Supergirl’s 21st birthday, an adventure that propels her across the vastness of the galaxy. Unlike her famous cousin, Kara Zor-El endured a profoundly difficult upbringing, spending her first 14 years surviving on a fragment of Krypton and witnessing the demise of those around her. This traumatic history, according to Gunn, results in a “more hardened version” of the character. In this specific story arc, she forms an alliance with an alien girl named Ruthye, who is desperately seeking vengeance for the murder of her father, perpetrated by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills.

Millie Alcock, best known for her compelling performance as Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, embodies Kara. James Gunn emphasized the character's importance and potential, stating that she is “not here to live in Superman's shadow—she's here to eclipse it.” The ensemble cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts taking on the role of the antagonist Krem. Furthermore, Jason Momoa, who previously portrayed Aquaman, is confirmed to appear as the bounty hunter Lobo, an inclusion that represents an expansion upon the original comic book plot. Rounding out the cast are David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham, announced as Supergirl’s parents, Zor-El and Alura, respectively. David Krumholtz confirmed the film's dedication to its source material, noting that the movie is “very faithful to the graphic novel upon which it is based.”

The production utilized various locations, including the facilities at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in London for filming. Director Craig Gillespie is expected to infuse the project with his signature stylistic approach, which skillfully balances elements of comedy and drama. This unique tonal blend is anticipated to effectively humanize the characters, offering depth and relatability to the high-stakes cosmic adventure, ensuring the film resonates deeply with audiences worldwide.
