Film studio Lionsgate has officially greenlit the production of a follow-up to their successful thriller, The Housemaid. This new installment has been titled The Housemaid's Secret, signaling a continuation of the suspenseful narrative.

The initial film, which premiered on December 19, 2025, proved to be a significant financial triumph. It managed to gross 133 million dollars globally against a production budget of merely 35 million dollars. This impressive performance, achieved even while competing against major releases such as Avatar: Fire and Ash, provided the studio with a compelling reason to accelerate development on the next installment, which is based on the popular book series penned by Freida McFadden. Critical reception for the first movie was largely positive, earning a 73 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers praising it as a clever nod to the gripping, stylish thrillers that once dominated cinema.

Sydney Sweeney, who portrayed the central character Millie Calloway, has confirmed her return to the role and will also take on the responsibilities of an executive producer for the sequel. The core creative team remains intact for this next chapter. Director Paul Feig and screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who handled the adaptation of the first novel, are both set to return to continue Millie’s intense story. Furthermore, Michelle Morrone, who played Enzo in the original film, is expected to reprise his role; negotiations for his involvement are reportedly nearing completion. The screenplay for The Housemaid's Secret will draw its narrative foundation from McFadden's second novel in the trilogy, which shares the same title.

Filming for The Housemaid's Secret is tentatively scheduled to commence near the close of 2026, suggesting a likely theatrical debut sometime in 2027. The plot will once again center on Millie Calloway. Seeking to put her complicated past behind her, she secures a new position as a live-in housekeeper, only to find herself entangled in a fresh set of mysteries that are just as complex and perilous as the last. In the first movie, Sweeney portrayed Millie, a woman with a criminal record who took employment with the affluent Winchester couple, played by Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar.

The overall success of this franchise, bolstered by book sales exceeding 12 million copies across the series—including The Housemaid's Secret—suggests that Lionsgate may move forward with adapting further novels by Freida McFadden, such as The Housemaid Is Watching and The Housemaid's Wedding. Adam Fogelson, the head of Lionsgate's theatrical distribution division, emphasized that the robust audience engagement both at the box office internationally and across social media platforms confirmed the public's eagerness to follow Millie's journey further. Production duties will be handled by Paul Feig’s companies, Hidden Pictures and Pretty Dangerous Pictures, with author Freida McFadden also serving as an executive producer on the project.
