Focus Features has officially slated the musical romantic drama, 'Song Sung Blue,' for a wide theatrical debut on December 25, 2025. This strategic placement positions the film as a major contender during the competitive holiday release window. The project is helmed by director Craig Brewer, whose previous credits include 'Hustle & Flow' and 'Dolemite Is My Name.' Brewer adapted the screenplay based on the 2008 documentary of the same name by Greg Kocas.
The narrative centers on the real-life story of Mike Sardina, portrayed by Hugh Jackman, and his wife, Claire Sardina, played by Kate Hudson. This couple hailed from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and achieved local renown through their dedicated tribute band honoring the music of Neil Diamond, which they called 'Lightning and Thunder.'
Jackman takes on the role of a Vietnam veteran who is simultaneously grappling with sobriety and overcoming alcoholism. Meanwhile, Hudson embodies the character of a former Patsy Cline tribute artist, a performance for which she previously earned a Golden Globe nomination. The film delves deep into the personal struggles and shared musical journey of this devoted pair.
The foundation of the film is the authentic history of Mike and Claire Sardina, who performed together consistently from 1989 until Mike's untimely passing in 2006. Mike died at the age of 55 due to complications from heart issues. The ensemble cast also features Michael Imperioli, taking on a role reminiscent of Buddy Holly, and Mustafa Shakir, who steps into the shoes of James Brown. A significant dramatic turning point in their lives involved Claire suffering the loss of her leg in a severe car accident back in 1999.
The duo’s career high point, performing at renowned venues like Summerfest, culminated in them opening for the band Pearl Jam. This blend of professional achievement and personal adversity forms the emotional core of the movie, showcasing their unwavering commitment to their craft despite immense hardship.
To generate buzz for the upcoming picture, Jackman and Hudson treated audiences to live performances of songs featured in the film during a special concert event held at Radio City Music Hall on October 3rd and 4th, 2025. Further promotional efforts saw Jackman and Director Brewer traveling to Milwaukee in December 2025. They participated in a promotional event at the historic Oriental Theater there. The movie ultimately shines a spotlight on the couple's sheer tenacity and profound passion for performing, promising audiences a heartfelt, fact-based narrative about perseverance.
