Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler to Lead Ryan Coogler’s ‘The X-Files’ Reboot for Hulu

British-Indian actor Himesh Patel has been officially cast as the male lead for the pilot episode of the highly anticipated "The X-Files" reboot, currently in development for the Hulu streaming platform. Patel is set to star alongside Danielle Deadwyler, with the pair portraying a duo of highly skilled yet fundamentally different Federal Bureau of Investigation agents. Rather than serving as direct reinterpretations of the iconic Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, these new characters will forge a fresh partnership to investigate unexplained phenomena within the bureau's long-dormant paranormal division.
The project is being spearheaded by Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed filmmaker behind "Creed" and "Black Panther," who will serve as both the writer and director for the pilot under his Proximity Media banner. Coogler has been vocal about his creative vision, expressing a firm desire to make this new iteration "really damn scary" while paying homage to the atmospheric, dark tone that defined the original series. Ensuring a sense of continuity within this supernatural world, original series creator Chris Carter is attached as an executive producer. The production has also tapped Jennifer Yale as showrunner, with Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler joining the executive production team.
Production for the pilot is scheduled to commence in early May in Vancouver, a city that holds deep historical significance for the franchise, having served as the primary filming location for the show's first five seasons. Coogler, who has shared personal anecdotes about growing up watching the original series with his mother, aims to craft a revival that resonates with long-time devotees while simultaneously capturing the interest of a new generation. The filming schedule is expected to span approximately one month, concluding in June, and will focus on the "monster of the week" format—an element Coogler identifies as a vital component of the show's narrative DNA.
Himesh Patel, recognized for his versatile performances in "Yesterday" and "Enola Holmes 3," is expected to infuse his FBI agent character with a unique blend of intellectual curiosity, warmth, and a touch of eccentricity. His co-star, Danielle Deadwyler, known for her powerful roles in "Till" and "The Piano Lesson," had previously been confirmed for the second lead role. The narrative core of the series will reportedly hinge on the professional friction and contrasting worldviews between these two investigators. Interestingly, original series star Gillian Anderson has confirmed that she has read the pilot script, describing the material as "really good."
While Hulu officially gave the pilot the "green light" in March 2026, a full series order has not yet been finalized. This latest chapter in "The X-Files" legacy promises to re-examine paranormal investigations through the lens of contemporary anxieties. By maintaining the philosophical tension and emotional resonance that transformed the original into a 1990s cultural phenomenon, the reboot seeks to find a balance between nostalgic reverence and modern storytelling.
