Hideo Kojima has confirmed that an anime adaptation of his popular game, Death Stranding, is in production. This announcement follows news of a live-action film adaptation in collaboration with A24. Kojima envisions exploring the unique storytelling possibilities of cinema and anime, separate from the game's narrative.
Kojima expressed his desire for the live-action film to achieve critical acclaim, potentially targeting prestigious film festivals. He aims to create a version of Death Stranding that can only be realized through film. The anime adaptation will be a separate project, further expanding the Death Stranding universe across various media.
This move aligns with Kojima's broader strategy to strengthen the Death Stranding IP. He plans to expand the game's reach through sequels, movies, anime, and TV dramas. The sequel to the game, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, is scheduled for release on June 26, 2025, featuring returning stars Norman Reedus and Léa Seydoux, along with new additions like George Miller, Elle Fanning, and others. Michael Sarnoski, director of A Quiet Place: Day One, is set to write and direct the live-action film.
