James L. Brooks, the acclaimed director known for classics like "Terms of Endearment" and "Broadcast News," is returning to the director's chair with "Ella McCay," a comedy-drama slated for release on December 12, 2025. This marks his first directorial project in over a decade since "How Do You Know" in 2010.
The film stars Emma Mackey as Ella McCay, an idealistic young politician navigating the complexities of familial responsibilities and a demanding professional life while preparing to succeed her mentor, the state's long-serving incumbent governor. The ensemble cast includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ayo Edebiri, Rebecca Hall, Julie Kavner, Becky Ann Baker, Joey Brooks, and Spike Fearn. Albert Brooks also makes an appearance in the film.
Production began in Rhode Island on February 1, 2024, with additional filming in Cleveland and New Orleans. The film is produced by Gracie Films and distributed by 20th Century Studios.
