The Cannes Film Festival 2025 concluded on May 24th with the prestigious awards ceremony at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. The festival, which ran from May 13th to 24th, showcased a diverse range of cinematic talent from around the world.
The Palme d'Or, the festival's highest honor, was awarded to Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi for 'It Was Just an Accident'. This marks a significant win for Panahi, who has faced previous bans from filmmaking. The film tells the story of ordinary Iranians confronting a man they believed tortured them in jail.
Other notable winners include Joachim Trier for 'Sentimental Value' (Grand Prix), Oliver Laxe for 'Sirat' and Mascha Schilinski for 'Sound of Falling' (Jury Prize, tied). Wagner Moura won Best Actor for 'The Secret Agent', and Nadia Melliti won Best Actress for 'The Little Sister'. Robert De Niro and Denzel Washington received honorary Palme d'Or awards for their lifetime achievements. Juliette Binoche served as jury president for the main competition.
