The original Hermès Birkin bag, custom-made for Jane Birkin in 1984, was auctioned at Sotheby's Paris for 7 million euros. This sale marks a significant moment in fashion history, highlighting the enduring appeal of the iconic accessory.

The unique black leather prototype, bearing Birkin's initials, was created after a chance encounter with Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas. The bag's design incorporates seven distinctive elements, setting it apart from commercial versions.

These include a non-removable shoulder strap, attached nail clipper, gilded brass hardware, bottom studs, unique size and shape, front flap stamped with initials, and distinctive stitching. The bag's journey includes a charity auction in 1994 and ownership by a Paris collector before the recent sale.

The Birkin bag's status as a cultural icon remains undisputed, associated with luxury and celebrity. It has become a coveted piece in the wardrobes of celebrities and stylists. Jane Birkin, who passed away in 2023, inspired one of fashion's most sought-after accessories.
