Miuccia Prada has partnered with Academy Award-winning costume designer Catherine Martin for Miu Miu's new Upcycled collection. This collection pays homage to the 1920s, blending lingerie elements with sailor jackets.
To present the Upcycled collection, Miu Miu created a short film, 'Grande Envie,' featuring Daisy Ridley and Willem Dafoe. Directed by Martin, the film incorporates elements of a gothic novel with a glamorous twist.
Martin, known for her work on films like 'Romeo + Juliet,' 'The Great Gatsby,' and 'Elvis,' collaborated with Prada on costume design for 'Elvis' and 'The Great Gatsby.' For Miu Miu, she drew inspiration from life on the French Riviera between the World Wars, a haven for artists and writers.
Martin's moodboard included photographs by Jacques Henri Lartigue, capturing the Roaring Twenties. The collection features contrasts, combining lingerie with striped t-shirts, denim with evening wear, and rowing blazers.
The collection includes lace petticoats paired with t-shirts, bermudas with printed scarves, and socks with microshorts. Stripes and sailor jackets evoke the beaches of the South of France.
'Grande Envie' is set in a 1930s chateau in the South of France, featuring Callina Liang, Daisy Ridley, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Diana Silvers, and Eliot Sumner. Willem Dafoe plays a mysterious Count who welcomes girls to his castle, haunted by the Countess.
Launched in 2020, Miu Miu Upcycled repurposes vintage pieces to promote circular design practices. Martin chose vintage scarves and reused lace from women's lingerie to decorate slip dresses.
Photographer Michella Bredahl captured the collection's essence, portraying an eternal summer afternoon filled with games, music, and dreams of the French Riviera.
