EU's Sustainable Fashion Initiative: Digital Product Passports Rollout in 2025

Edited by: Екатерина С.

The European Union is pushing forward with its ambitious plan to transform the fashion industry, with significant steps occurring in 2025. A key element of this initiative is the Digital Product Passport (DPP), designed to enhance transparency and sustainability across the fashion value chain.

The DPP aims to provide detailed information about a product's lifecycle, including its origin, materials, production process, environmental impact, and recyclability. This digital record, accessible via QR codes or NFC chips, will empower consumers to make informed and sustainable choices.

Several key milestones are expected in 2025. The first ESPR Working Plan was adopted on April 19, 2025, outlining priority actions and timelines for implementing the DPP, including for the fashion sector. Legislation is expected to be passed in mid-2025 to enforce the ban on the destruction of unsold goods. Regulations on key elements of the DPP, such as the DPP registry and data carrier rules, are expected by late 2025. The EU requires member states to collect end-of-life textile products separately from January 1, 2025.
