The Marta Ortega Pérez Foundation (MOP Foundation) is set to unveil "Wonderland," a significant retrospective of American photographer Annie Leibovitz's work, commencing on November 22, 2025, in A Coruña, Spain.
This exhibition marks the first major presentation of Leibovitz's extensive career in Spain, showcasing over one hundred images that span five decades of her influential contributions to portraiture and fashion photography. The MOP Foundation, established in 2022 with a focus on fashion, photography, and its home city of A Coruña, has previously hosted exhibitions by renowned photographers such as Peter Lindbergh, Steven Meisel, and Helmut Newton, underscoring its commitment to celebrating photographic artistry.
"Wonderland" is meticulously structured into four distinct sections, offering a comprehensive journey through Leibovitz's evolving visual language. Visitors will experience an immersive installation dedicated to her work with the Rolling Stones, providing a unique glimpse into her early career as a concert-tour photographer. The exhibition will also delve into her formative years and the development of her distinctive aesthetic, alongside a substantial focus on her groundbreaking fashion photography, much of which will be exhibited publicly for the first time.
Marta Ortega Pérez, president of the MOP Foundation, has lauded Leibovitz's exceptional ability to capture the intrinsic aura of her subjects, revealing truths often unseen by others. Leibovitz, who joined Vogue in 1993, has cultivated a unique narrative style that has profoundly shaped contemporary cultural memory through her compelling portraits of musicians, actors, athletes, and political figures. Her ability to connect intimately with her subjects, often spending significant time with them to foster trust, allows her to capture their essence in a way that resonates deeply.
Leibovitz's career, which began with Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s, quickly established her as a pivotal figure in photography. Her iconic images, including the poignant portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono taken shortly before Lennon's death, have become ingrained in the cultural landscape. Her transition to Vanity Fair in 1983 and subsequent work with Vogue further solidified her status as one of the most influential portraitists of recent times. The exhibition is further enriched by a film and publication produced by the MOP Foundation, featuring interviews with notable collaborators such as Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith. This comprehensive presentation, running until May 1, 2026, offers a profound exploration of Leibovitz's artistic vision and her enduring impact on the world of visual arts.
