NHRC Investigates Odisha Gang Rape Allegations

NHRC has launched an investigation into a media report concerning the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old female college student in Odisha. The incident reportedly occurred on Gopalpur sea beach, involving nearly 10 men. The victim was visiting the beach with a male friend when the assault occurred. The perpetrators allegedly overpowered her friend before committing the crime. NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Odisha. They are requesting a detailed report within two weeks, including the investigation's status and the victim's health.

The report is also expected to detail any compensation or counseling provided by state authorities. The victim received a medical examination at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. Police have detained seven suspects in connection with the case.

Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das has criticized the state government's handling of the case. He stated that crimes against women have spread like a pandemic in Odisha. Das linked the increase in sexual crimes to poor governance and a lack of seriousness in addressing women's safety.

NHRC's intervention emphasizes the severity of the situation. It underscores the need for prompt and effective action to address such serious human rights violations. The investigation aims to ensure justice and accountability in the wake of these disturbing allegations.
