Seddülbahir Castle Restoration Earns Global Architectural Acclaim

Edited by: Ек Soshnikova

The historic Seddülbahir Castle's comprehensive restoration has garnered significant international recognition, culminating in a prestigious award at The International Architecture Awards 2025. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Athens on September 20, 2025. Prior to this event, an exhibition titled "The City and The World" will showcase exceptional architectural projects at Contemporary Space Athens from September 19 to October 5, 2025, offering the architectural community a preview of these achievements.

The 17th-century Ottoman fortress, a symbol of enduring architectural heritage, underwent a meticulous restoration process that began in 2015 and concluded in 2023. This extensive project successfully preserved the castle's historical character while integrating contemporary architectural principles. The restoration's excellence was further acknowledged in 2024, receiving a "Heritage Project" award at the Dezeen Awards and being a finalist in the "Completed Cultural Buildings" category at the World Architecture Festival. It also received a Jury Special Commendation in the "Completed Cultural Buildings" category at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore.

Originally constructed in 1656 under the patronage of Hatice Turhan Sultan, mother of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV, Seddülbahir Castle played a vital role as a defensive structure at the Dardanelles Strait's entrance. The castle sustained considerable damage during the Gallipoli Campaign of World War I due to Allied bombing. The restoration effort, coordinated by the Çanakkale Wars Gallipoli Historical Site Directorate, involved 17 years of research, documentation, and design, with contributions from Istanbul Technical University and Koç University.

This significant achievement highlights a deep commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage through innovative architectural practices. The successful revitalization of Seddülbahir Castle not only honors its rich historical importance but also showcases advancements in architectural restoration, fostering a broader global appreciation for historical structures. The project's success serves as an example of how thoughtful intervention can revitalize historical sites, ensuring their narratives continue to resonate with future generations. The restoration also received accolades from the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) with a National Architecture Exhibition and Awards for Structure-Conservation, and a Landscape Architects Association General Category Project award.
