Japan Pavilion Venice Architecture Biennale 2025: "In-Between" Explores AI and Human Collaboration

Edited by: Ек Soshnikova

The Japan Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025, titled "In-Between," delves into the evolving relationship between human creativity and artificial intelligence. Curated by Jun Aoki, the exhibition, running from May 10 to November 23, 2025, explores the concept of "ma," a Japanese term for the space and tension between elements, to foster dialogue between human, non-human, natural, and artificial entities.

The pavilion aims to create a vision of architecture that is fluid, responsive and decentralized. The design considers AI as an integrated force, blurring the lines between natural and artificial, human and machine, physical and digital. The architectural components, including the Hole, Wall Columns, Outer Walls, Brick Terrace, Pensilina, Tilted Loop Path, and Yew Tree, are positioned as interactive participants.

Two artistic teams, Taichi Sunayama + Toshikatsu Kiuchi and Asako Fujikura + Takahiro Ohmura, contribute to the exhibition, exploring the relationship between architecture and the digital world. The Japan Foundation organizes Japan's participation, with the aim of promoting international mutual understanding through cultural exchange.
