BRICK AWARD 26 Shortlist Highlights Global Sustainable Brick Architecture

Edited by: Ек Soshnikova

The BRICK AWARD 26 has announced its shortlist, featuring 50 outstanding brick buildings from 21 countries, demonstrating the material's ongoing significance in modern architecture. Established in 2004 by Wienerberger, this biennial award celebrates innovative and sustainable brick architecture globally.

The selected projects represent a wide array of architectural typologies, including individual homes, large-scale urban housing, commercial structures, public spaces, and experimental designs. Notable entries showcase the versatility of brick, such as the Shafagh Tomb in Iran, which transforms a traditional mausoleum into an inverted dome serving as both a private memorial and a public monument.

Further highlights include the Aga Khan Academy in Dhaka, Bangladesh, designed to integrate ample green spaces within a dense urban setting, acting as a vital "green lung" for the community. The Aga Khan Academy in Dhaka received EDGE certification, becoming the first project in Bangladesh to be awarded this prestigious recognition for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. In India, the Metallic Bellows Factory Office prioritizes CO₂ reduction by minimizing concrete use . The UCCA Clay Museum in China, designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, features a roof inspired by local mountains and a facade of handmade ceramic tiles, honoring regional ceramic traditions.

In New York, 64 University Place exemplifies contemporary residential design with a hand-laid brick facade, harmonizing historical context with modern living. Its architecture, developed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, pays homage to the architectural style of the Greenwich Village area, using traditional brickwork and arched windows, while implementing modern solutions to improve energy efficiency and create comfortable living spaces. It is also mentioned that bricks sourced from Pennsylvania were used in its construction to reduce transport emissions. The BRICK AWARD 26 continues to emphasize the creative and environmental benefits of brick construction. The award received a record hundreds of submissions from five continents, reflecting the worldwide interest in brick architecture.

Winners will be honored at a ceremony in Vienna on June 11, 2026, recognizing architects for their contributions to sustainable and aesthetically compelling design in construction. The award underscores the enduring appeal and adaptability of brick as a primary building material.
