NuScale Power and PNNL Unveil Revolutionary Nuclear-Powered System for Clean Hydrogen and Water Production

In a groundbreaking development, NuScale Power Corporation and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have joined forces to create an innovative system. This system integrates nuclear energy to produce both clean hydrogen and desalinated water, marking a significant step towards industrial decarbonization and addressing water scarcity.

The project, announced in early 2023, utilizes NuScale's certified 77 MWe NuScale Power Module (NPM), a small modular reactor (SMR). The reactor provides thermal energy for a reverse osmosis desalination setup, converting seawater into fresh water.

The system then employs a hydro-thermal chemical process, powered by reactor heat, to transform the leftover brine into clean hydrogen. This method offers a low-carbon alternative to traditional hydrogen production, addressing one of desalination's major environmental concerns.

The process begins with filtering seawater through advanced membranes, separating clean water from concentrated brine. The brine is then converted into sodium formate and other intermediates. When combined with heat and steam from the reactor, this reaction yields hydrogen gas.

This integrated approach is tested using NuScale's Integrated Energy System Simulator. The simulator allows engineers to assess system performance and optimize the interplay between desalination and hydrogen production before real-world implementation.

The significance of this project lies in its potential to revolutionize hydrogen production. It generates green hydrogen in a low-carbon, energy-efficient manner. This system has the potential to be used in transportation, heavy industry, and energy storage.
