The National Archaeological Museum in Madrid is currently exhibiting the largest collection of Roman coins ever found in Spain. The exhibition, titled "Monedas que brotan de la tierra. El Tesoro de Tomares, Sevilla," opened on May 13, 2025, and will run until September 28, 2025.
The treasure, discovered in 2016 in Tomares, Seville, includes over 50,000 bronze coins. These coins were found within three oil amphorae, dating from the late 3rd to early 4th century AD.
The Tomares Treasure offers insights into the economy and politics of the Tetrarchy period. The exhibition also features coins depicting the nine emperors of the era, including seven unique specimens. The exhibit is free and provides a fascinating look at Roman history.
