Two hikers made a remarkable discovery in February 2025 while exploring the Krkonoše Mountains in the Czech Republic. They stumbled upon a hidden cache of gold coins and jewelry, estimated to be worth over $340,000.
The treasure consisted of two containers. The first was a metal can containing 598 gold coins dating from 1808 to 1915, originating from countries including France, Belgium, Romania, Italy, and Russia. The second container, an iron box, held 16 cigarette cases, 10 bracelets, a comb, a chain, and a mesh bag, all made from a yellow metal.
The Museum of Eastern Bohemia is currently investigating the origins of the hoard. Experts speculate it may have been hidden during the Nazi occupation in the late 1930s, or during the deportations of Jewish and Czech populations during World War II. The hikers will receive a 10% finder's fee, and the treasure will be displayed to the public after analysis.
