Baghdad Shrine Restoration: Reviving Iraq's Jewish Heritage

The restoration of Rabbi Isaac Gaon's shrine in Baghdad marks a significant step in reviving Iraq's Jewish heritage. This centuries-old tomb, which had fallen into disrepair, is undergoing a $150,000 renovation funded by the Jewish community. The project aims to revitalize the community both within Iraq and abroad.

Rabbi Isaac Gaon, a prominent figure from the Gaonic period, is believed to have headed the Pumbedita Academy. Historical accounts suggest his prominence in the 10th century. The restoration seeks to preserve the memory of his influence and the historical presence of Jews in Iraq.

Once a vibrant community, Iraq's Jewish population has dwindled significantly since 1948, with only a few members remaining today. The shrine's restoration, supported by Iraqi officials, offers hope for preserving remaining Jewish sites, many of which are in ruins.
