An international project, the Leonardo da Vinci DNA Project, has identified living descendants of Leonardo da Vinci's paternal family. This breakthrough, detailed in the book "Genìa Da Vinci," traces his family tree back to 1331. It identifies 15 living male relatives sharing the Y chromosome with Leonardo's father and half-brother.

The Y chromosome, passed down from father to son, was key to this research. Six of the 15 relatives underwent genetic testing, confirming a genetic link spanning at least 15 generations. Leonardo had over twenty half-siblings, expanding his family network.

Excavations at the family tomb in the Church of Santa Croce in Vinci are underway. The tomb potentially contains remains of his grandfather, uncle, and half-siblings. Bone fragments have been recovered and radiocarbon dated, with one matching the appropriate era.

Paleogenetic analysis of these remains could confirm their biological relationship to the living descendants. Matching DNA could unlock the possibility of obtaining Leonardo's DNA from family remains. It could even come from traces left on his manuscripts or artwork.

Scientists aim to analyze potential genetic predispositions related to Leonardo's unique abilities. This includes his vision, creativity, and work ethic. The project may also shed light on his health, longevity, and cause of death.

Leonardo's writings suggest an early understanding of epigenetics, the impact of environment on heredity. The project also explores the Da Vinci family's history and geography. A previously undocumented drawing attributed to Leonardo, the "Dragon Unicorn," was discovered in an old Vinci home.
