Abu Dhabi and UCSF Partner to Establish World's First Genome Surgery Centers, Revolutionizing Genetic Medicine

Edited by: Katia Remezova Cath

The collaboration between Abu Dhabi and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) aims to revolutionize healthcare by integrating genome surgery, offering personalized genetic therapies to treat and prevent diseases. This advancement promises to correct genetic conditions, prevent chronic diseases, and reduce healthcare costs, ultimately improving the lives of people worldwide.

Genome surgery, a cutting-edge medical technique, involves modifying or replacing faulty genes within cells to address genetic disorders. These centers will utilize advanced technologies like CRISPR, a gene-editing tool, to provide customized interventions tailored to each patient's unique genetic makeup. This approach allows for precise targeting of genetic defects, offering the potential for cures and improved health outcomes.

H.E. Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, emphasized the significance of this partnership, highlighting Abu Dhabi's commitment to pioneering advanced science applications. The collaboration with UCSF and the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) will accelerate the integration of genome-guided care, creating opportunities to correct genetic conditions early in life. Dr. Tippi MacKenzie, Director of the UCSF Broad Stem Cell Center, expressed excitement about developing life-saving therapies for patients with severe genetic conditions.

The initiative also focuses on building national expertise by training Emirati professionals in genomic surgery and clinical innovation. By intervening early in life-threatening or debilitating conditions, the initiative seeks to support families and ease pressure on the healthcare system. This effort aligns with Abu Dhabi's broader vision to embed genomics into public health and drive personalized and preventive care.

The Emirati Genome Programme, with over 800,000 sequenced genomes, is central to these efforts, creating a diverse national database. The program has enabled initiatives like the national pharmacogenomics reporting system (PGx), with over 160,000 reports to tailor treatment plans. Additional milestones include integrating genetic testing into the Premarital Screening Programme and the launch of the Newborn Genetic Screening Programme.

This partnership represents a significant step forward in genetic medicine, offering hope for treating and preventing genetic diseases. By investing in advanced technologies and training, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as a global leader in genomic care, potentially transforming healthcare for future generations. The development of genome surgery holds immense value for individuals and society by offering the possibility of cures and improved quality of life.
