Former NASA engineer and popular YouTuber Mark Rober has launched a unique service called Space Selfie. This project allows individuals to send their photos into orbit and have them photographed with Earth as the backdrop.
Participants can upload a selfie, which will then be displayed on a screen aboard the Sat Gus satellite. The satellite will capture an image showing both the Earth and the uploaded photo. Sat Gus was launched on January 14, 2025, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Transporter-12 mission. It orbits at an altitude of approximately 600 km.
Equipped with two radiation-resistant Google Pixel smartphones, two cameras, solar panels, and batteries, Sat Gus is designed to take up to 1,000 photos from space. This initiative aims to inspire interest in space and technology while promoting STEAM education, making space accessible to the public.
