The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has enabled the creation of the largest map of the universe to date, a project called COSMOS-Web. This groundbreaking achievement, announced on June 5, 2025, provides an unprecedented view of the cosmos, containing nearly 800,000 galaxies.
The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) played a key role in this project, contributing to the morphological classification of over half a million galaxies using neural networks. This is essential for understanding how galaxies form and evolve over cosmic time. The COSMOS-Web survey is the largest project undertaken by JWST in its first year.
The advanced technology of JWST allows for the observation of much fainter and more distant galaxies than previously possible. This has opened new avenues for studying the early universe and its evolution. The data from COSMOS-Web is now available to the scientific community, offering detailed information on galaxy shapes, brightness, distances, and other physical properties.
