Yamuna River Surges Past Danger Mark, Delhi on High Alert Amid Heavy Rainfall

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

New Delhi is on high alert as the Yamuna River's water level has risen significantly, reaching 207.09 meters at the Old Railway Bridge, surpassing the danger mark of 205.33 meters. This alarming surge has prompted fears of flooding in low-lying areas across the capital.

The elevated water levels are attributed to persistent heavy rainfall in the region and substantial water releases from upstream barrages, particularly the Hathni Kund Barrage. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Warning for heavy rainfall in various Delhi districts, emphasizing the need for caution.

Authorities have implemented precautionary measures, including the closure of the Old Railway Bridge (Loha Pul) to traffic and the shutting of four drain regulators to prevent backflow into the city's drainage system. The Delhi government has activated its flood preparedness plan, mobilizing resources such as sandbags, boats, and pumping stations. Relief centers have been established, and over 10,000 people have been evacuated from 28 affected locations to safer grounds.

The current situation is a stark reminder of Delhi's vulnerability to natural events. Historical data indicates that the Yamuna crossing the 207-meter mark is a rare occurrence, having happened only four times in the past 63 years. The most recent instance was in July 2023, when the river reached an unprecedented 208.66 meters, causing widespread inundation.

Officials have warned that the Yamuna's water level in Delhi may not recede before Thursday. The continuous water release from the Hathnikund barrage, exceeding 100,000 cusecs, is a primary driver of the current crisis, with water released on Monday expected to reach Delhi within 36 to 48 hours, contributing to the surge observed on Tuesday.
