A seismic event with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale was registered in the waters off Davao Occidental on Tuesday morning, August 12, 2025. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 140 kilometers, with its epicenter located about 80 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the earthquake was tectonic in origin. No significant material damage or injuries have been reported as a consequence of this seismic activity, and no tsunami alert has been issued. PHIVOLCS is actively monitoring the situation and has advised residents to remain aware of the possibility of aftershocks. Instrumental intensities were recorded in several areas, with Intensity III felt in Malungon, Sarangani, and Intensity II felt in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental, among other locations. The Philippines' location along the Pacific Ring of Fire makes it prone to frequent earthquakes.
