Mount Etna Erupts in Sicily: Lava Fountain and Ash Plumes Observed

Edited by: gaya ❤️ one

Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano located in Sicily, Italy, erupted on Monday, June 2, 2025. The eruption was reported by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which detected a pyroclastic flow originating from a collapse in the north of the Southeast Crater at 9:24 AM local time.

The eruption featured a lava fountain accompanied by the release of lapilli and gas. A thick grey cloud containing ash was observed. Surveillance cameras had detected increased activity since Sunday, leading the INGV to raise the Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) alert level to orange.

While the eruption caused tourists to flee the area, there have been no reported impacts on operations at Catania Airport. Mount Etna remains under close observation for further activity.
