A significant wildfire is currently raging within Vesuvius National Park in Italy, with flames reaching altitudes of 1,050 meters. The fire, exacerbated by high temperatures and strong winds, is primarily affecting the pine forests of Terzigno and the hilly areas of Boscotrecase, extending its reach between the municipalities of Terzigno and Ottaviano. This ongoing incident highlights the park's continued vulnerability to fires.
An extensive firefighting operation is in progress, involving eight aerial units—six Canadairs and two regional helicopters—supported by over one hundred ground personnel, including firefighters, civil protection volunteers, and metropolitan personnel. The Prefecture of Naples has established a permanent coordination table for these emergency operations. The president of the Vesuvius National Park has expressed deep concern, stressing the need to protect the region's natural heritage and ensure public safety. This event is reminiscent of the 2017 wildfires that devastated approximately 3,350 hectares of the park, causing an estimated economic loss of €14.363 million. The Italian Civil Protection Department, through its Unified Air Operations Center (COAU), plays a crucial role in coordinating the state's aerial firefighting fleet, ensuring an effective national response.
