Indonesian Volcano Eruption Disrupts Flights and Prompts Evacuations

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki in Indonesia has erupted, sending a significant column of volcanic ash approximately 11 miles (18 kilometers) into the atmosphere. Authorities have issued warnings and reassessed the volcano's alert status, which has been raised to its highest level. Nearby villages, including Borou, Kewa, and Watobou, have been evacuated due to falling ash and debris. No casualties have been reported, but residents are advised to stay clear of designated danger zones.

This activity is a continuation of eruptions that began in late 2023, with a notable surge in November 2024 resulting in fatalities and injuries. The volcanic ash cloud has impacted international travel, leading airlines such as Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia, and Qantas to cancel or delay services. Flores Island, a popular tourist destination, has also experienced considerable disruption, with many planned activities canceled.

The disruptions have affected thousands of travelers, with at least 24 flights between Bali and Australia, Singapore, and South Korea experiencing cancellations or delays on July 7, 2025. Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki, standing at 1,584 meters, is part of a twin volcano system. Its recent activity, including an eruption on June 18, 2025, has maintained the highest alert level.

The alert level was again raised to the highest of Indonesia's four-tiered system on September 19, 2025, with warnings to stay at least six kilometers from the crater. The potential for hazardous lahar floods, a type of mud or debris flow, is also a concern in case of heavy rainfall. The airport in Maumere, on Flores Island, suspended operations following recent eruptions, although Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport has largely remained operational.

Volcanic ash poses a substantial danger to aircraft, as it can damage engines and affect flight controls, prompting airlines to prioritize safety by grounding flights when ash clouds are present.
