Gabrielle Strengthens to Hurricane, Poses Potential Threat to Bermuda
Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17
Tropical Storm Gabrielle has intensified into a hurricane, with its projected path indicating a potential threat to Bermuda. The storm's center is currently located near latitude 21.9 North and longitude 54.8 West, moving west-northwest. Maximum sustained winds are approximately 50 mph, but forecasts predict an increase to Category 1 hurricane strength by Sunday.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 150 miles from Gabrielle's core. Bermuda residents are advised to closely monitor the storm's progression, as it is expected to pass to the east of the island on Sunday night and Monday. While direct impacts on the U.S. mainland are not anticipated, coastal areas along the U.S. East Coast may experience elevated surf and dangerous rip currents later in the week. Swells generated by Gabrielle are expected to reach Bermuda by Friday night and intensify over the weekend, potentially causing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
Forecasters anticipate Gabrielle will become a hurricane by Sunday and could strengthen further into a Category 2 storm by Monday, with winds reaching 100 mph, making it the second hurricane of the season. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) notes that while the storm is expected to remain over open waters and curve away from the U.S., forecast tracks are subject to change. The NHC's average track error at three days is approximately 90 miles, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring.
There is currently a 20-25% chance of Bermuda experiencing tropical-storm-force winds. In preparation for potential impacts, Bermuda's electricity provider, Belco, is closely monitoring the storm's development and has activated its crisis management team and hurricane plan. Critical spares are being strategically positioned, and crew assignments are being developed for a rapid response to power outages.
The government of Bermuda recommends that residents prepare an emergency plan and have an adequate home insurance coverage. Essential emergency supplies include at least three days' worth of food and water, a first aid kit, flashlights, and a battery-operated radio. Residents are also reminded to secure outdoor items.
