Storm Floris: Unseasonably Strong Winds and Heavy Rain Forecasted for Scotland

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Storm Floris is set to impact Scotland on Monday, August 4, 2025, bringing unseasonably strong winds and heavy rainfall. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind, effective from 6:00 AM on Monday to 6:00 AM on Tuesday, covering Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and parts of Wales.

According to the Met Office, inland areas may experience westerly wind gusts of 40-50 mph, with higher elevations and exposed coasts in Scotland potentially seeing gusts of 60-70 mph. There is a possibility of even stronger winds developing, with inland gusts of 60-70 mph and up to 85 mph along exposed Scottish coastlines and hills. Winds are expected to ease in the west during late Monday but remain strong in the east until early Tuesday. Heavy rain may also contribute to the disruption in some areas.

The Met Office advises the public to prepare for potential disruptions, including:

  • Damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs

  • Injuries and danger to life from flying debris

  • Power cuts, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage

  • Disruptions to road, rail, air, and ferry services, with longer journey times and cancellations possible

  • Injuries and danger to life from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads, and properties

To stay safe during Storm Floris, the Met Office recommends:

  • Securing loose items outside your home, such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences

  • Checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, and amending your travel plans if necessary

  • Preparing for power cuts by gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack, and other essential items

  • Being aware of large waves if you are on the coast, as even from the shore, large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea

  • Taking care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead

In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly. When a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.
