Delhi experienced its wettest May since 1901, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A recent thunderstorm delivered 81.4 mm of rain, bringing the month's total to 186.4 mm. This surpasses the previous record of 165 mm set in May 2008.
The storm, which hit early Sunday, featured winds reaching 82 kmph. It caused widespread waterlogging and uprooted trees, disrupting daily life. The IMD classified the deluge as 'heavy,' marking the city's second-highest 24-hour May rainfall.
The storm resulted from moist southeasterly winds interacting with dry westerlies. This was intensified by a western disturbance and two cyclonic circulations. The IMD forecasts intermittent light rain and thunderstorms to continue.
