Severe Winter Weather Hits Alaska - November 4, 2024

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A significant winter weather event is underway across Southcentral Alaska, with light snow showers reported overnight. Accumulations of up to one inch were observed in some areas, while additional snowfall of one to two inches is expected in the Interior. Road conditions are hazardous due to slick and slushy surfaces, particularly in regions like Turnagain Pass and Keystone Canyon.

The low-pressure system near Prince William Sound is anticipated to move eastward, allowing for brief periods of sunshine, though overcast conditions will return as another storm approaches. A winter storm warning is in effect for Western Prince William Sound, with expectations of heavy snow accumulation ranging from 12 to 18 inches and wind gusts reaching 55 mph.

A blizzard warning has also been issued for Thompson Pass, forecasting snow accumulations between 10 to 18 inches and visibility reduced to one quarter mile. High wind watches are in place for Turnagain Arm, where gusts could reach up to 75 mph.

In Southeast Alaska, rain is expected to intensify, with forecasts indicating one to two inches on Tuesday and two to five inches on Wednesday. Higher elevations may see a mix of rain and snow as temperatures fluctuate.

In the Interior, light snow will taper off, but a wind advisory is in effect for the Eastern Alaska Range, where gusts could reach 55 mph, leading to reduced visibility. Travel conditions are expected to remain challenging across the region as temperatures rise above freezing.

Western Alaska is preparing for impacts from the remnants of a strong typhoon that recently affected China and Taiwan. Blizzard warnings are in effect for the Kuskokwim Delta, with snow accumulations up to nine inches and winds gusting to 50 mph.

As the storm system progresses, the Aleutians will experience heavy rain and gusty winds, with precipitation amounts of one to two inches and gusts reaching 60 mph. A blizzard warning is also in place for the Pribilof Islands, where conditions will be severe.

Travelers are advised to exercise caution and prepare for ongoing hazardous conditions throughout the week.
