Ocean Power Technologies Deploys 5G-Enabled PowerBuoy for Naval Research

Edited by: Inna Horoshkina One

Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) has successfully installed its PowerBuoy system in Monterey Bay, California, for the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS).

This deployment integrates AT&T 5G technology and advanced subsea sensors into OPT's latest PowerBuoy, equipped with the Merrows suite for AI-capable Maritime Domain Awareness.

The PowerBuoy will provide continuous, autonomous monitoring and data collection, supporting environmental sensors and enhancing maritime security and operational awareness.

This collaboration demonstrates how PowerBuoys can serve as 5G communication nodes, providing internet access and high-speed data transmission to vessels.

The deployment is part of NPS Field Experimentation exercises, testing technologies to improve situational awareness and operational efficiency.

This marks a significant step in advancing persistent offshore infrastructure for defense, security, and research missions.
