A global initiative is underway to identify and protect ecologically or biologically significant areas (EBSAs) in the ocean. Coordinated by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), this effort involves numerous participants in regional workshops, covering a substantial portion of the world's oceans.
The EBSA process is a politically sanctioned, global effort to recognize and value specific marine areas. These identified EBSAs are now being integrated into spatial planning and monitoring programs to ensure ecosystems remain healthy and productive. Researchers are actively categorizing the ecosystems and species within these areas, identifying gaps in protection, and assessing the effectiveness of current conservation measures.
The CBD continues to advance ocean protection through the EBSA process, facilitating the modification of existing descriptions and the inclusion of new areas. A handbook has been produced to enhance understanding of the modalities involved. A webinar was held on April 9, 2025, to provide an overview of these modalities.
