San Luis Province Launches Ambitious Reforestation Initiative in Villa Mercedes

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

San Luis Province, in collaboration with the National University of San Luis (UNSL), is undertaking a significant reforestation project at the Water Mirrors of Villa Mercedes. The initiative aims to plant 1,500 native trees, shrubs, and grasses to enhance the ecological health and biodiversity of the area, transforming a previously sparse landscape into a thriving natural habitat.

A key focus of the project is the extensive planting of Aguaribay trees, also known as 'Molle' or 'Pirul.' These trees are valued for their ability to provide ample shade and contribute to the local ecosystem. Historically, the Aguaribay was revered by the Incas for its medicinal properties and natural insect-repellent qualities.

The reforestation plan is structured in multiple phases, with technical guidance provided by UNSL's Faculty of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences. The project's overarching goal is to establish much-needed shade in recreational areas and to create the province's first Floro-Faunistic Reserve within the Pedernera department, serving as a sanctuary for local flora and fauna.

Beyond aesthetic and ecological improvements, the initiative highlights the crucial role of forests in the water cycle. Forests act as natural regulators, absorbing rainfall and releasing it gradually, which helps prevent floods and ensures a more consistent water supply. Tree roots also aid in water infiltration, replenishing groundwater reserves, a vital function in regions prone to water scarcity. The focus on native species like the Aguaribay is expected to yield a balanced hydrological outcome, supporting both ecological restoration and water resource management.

This project aligns with broader environmental efforts across Argentina, emphasizing the importance of native species for ecological balance and cultural heritage. By reintroducing these elements, San Luis Province is nurturing a self-sustaining ecosystem that reflects a deep respect for the natural world and its regenerative capacities.
