Romania Unveils Stamp Series Celebrating Danube Delta's Biodiversity

Romfilatelia, Romania's national postal service, has issued a new series of stamps on September 2, 2025, highlighting the ecological, scientific, and tourist importance of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. This initiative draws attention to Europe's youngest landmass, a region characterized by its dynamic natural evolution.

The Danube Delta is a crucial sanctuary for European biodiversity, supporting over 5,000 species of flora and fauna. It features Europe's most extensive reed beds and the unique Letea forest, a subtropical woodland at its northernmost limit. The delta is also recognized as the habitat of the beluga sturgeon, the world's largest freshwater fish. Its significant natural heritage led to its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991, and it is an integral part of the Natura 2000 network, emphasizing its conservation value across the European Union.

September 1st is annually observed as the Day of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. The new stamp collection features four species vital to the delta's ecological balance: the Great Egret, the Common Kingfisher, the Eurasian Otter, and the Mallard. The first-day cover also includes an illustration of the White Stork, a notable migratory bird in the region. These stamps serve as a vibrant tribute to the Danube Delta's natural heritage, aiming to increase public awareness of its ecological significance and the ongoing need for its preservation.

The Danube Delta, a vast landscape covering over 5,800 square kilometers, acts as a critical stopover for millions of migratory birds annually, underscoring its role in global ecological networks. The Letea forest, in particular, is Europe's northernmost subtropical forest, an ecological anomaly with ancient oak trees and a rich undergrowth of lianas, further enhanced by the presence of wild horses roaming its sand dunes.
