National Geographic, in partnership with Embratur, has launched a new global initiative titled "Safari for the Senses" to highlight the Pantanal, a vast tropical wetland ecosystem in Brazil.
The campaign aims to immerse travelers in the sensory experiences of the Pantanal, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site renowned for its exceptional biodiversity. Wildlife photographer Filipe DeAndrade, a National Geographic Explorer and multi-Emmy award winner, is at the forefront of this initiative. DeAndrade has been documenting the region's flora and fauna, capturing its essence through visual storytelling for a worldwide audience.
The "Safari for the Senses" approach encourages experiencing the Pantanal through all five senses, emphasizing the sounds of its wildlife, the aromas of its vegetation, the textures of its terrains, and the subtle flavors of its local essence. The Pantanal is recognized as one of the planet's most biodiverse regions, supporting an estimated 4,700 species of plants and animals. It is particularly famous as a prime location for observing jaguars in their natural habitat, with areas like Porto Jofre noted for their high densities of these apex predators.
Beyond jaguars, the Pantanal is a haven for species such as the hyacinth macaw, the giant otter, and the capybara, and boasts an avian diversity exceeding 650 recorded species. The campaign seeks to position the Pantanal as a leading global ecotourism destination, fostering a deeper appreciation for its natural treasures and promoting responsible travel practices through strategic partnerships and international tourism engagement.
