Mérida, Mexico, is set to launch its 12th annual Forest Crusade between June 15 and July 16, 2025. The initiative aims to plant 8,500 trees across the city in just 18 days.
Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada emphasized the importance of community involvement in making Mérida a greener and more sustainable city. The project is part of the Mérida Verde strategy, promoting tree planting with community participation.
The crusade will plant 70 local species, including floral pollinators, shade trees, and fruit trees, in green corridors. These corridors will provide benefits to residents and fresh food for the community. Approximately 3,500 volunteers are expected to participate.
The city has also implemented several other initiatives to promote sustainability. These include the distribution of over 42,000 trees through the One Family, One Tree program, and the protection of 65 trees through the City Heritage Tree decree.
