Mexico observes World Bamboo Day on September 18th, a day dedicated to recognizing the significant versatility and deep-rooted cultural importance of bamboo across the nation. This remarkable plant, with a history of use dating back to pre-Hispanic times, continues to be a cornerstone resource, embodying both ancient wisdom and contemporary relevance. Mexico is home to a diverse array of bamboo species, with the National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) documenting 36 woody and four herbaceous varieties. Prominent species such as guaduas, cañizo, and caña brava are primarily cultivated in states including Veracruz, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, and Colima.
Historically, indigenous communities expertly utilized bamboo, particularly the otate (Otatea acuminata), for crafting essential items like shields, walls, headdresses, seating, and musical instruments.
