Loreto Advances Aguas Calientes Maquía Conservation Area Creation in 2025

20:51, 26 May

Edited by: Anulyazolotko Anulyazolotko

Significant progress is being made in 2025 towards establishing the Aguas Calientes Maquía Regional Conservation Area (ACR) in Loreto, Peru. The technical file supporting its creation was approved in April and May of this year, marking a crucial step in the ongoing effort to protect this unique ecosystem.

The Aguas Calientes Maquía encompasses 98,161.84 hectares within the Cordillera de Contamana. This area is known for its rich biodiversity, diverse landscapes, and sulfuric hot springs. Establishing it as an ACR would prevent deforestation of over 2,100 hectares of primary forest over the next two decades.

The area is home to a diverse range of species, including 517 flora species (11 endemic and 20 threatened) and 462 fauna species (39 endangered). Protecting these ecosystems is vital for maintaining water availability for agriculture and local communities, aligning with global conservation goals.
